Dorothy M. Salyer

August 13, 1923 ~ December 1, 2017 (age 94) 94 Years Old
Dorothy Mae Salyer, 94, went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 1, 2017 at her daughter's home in St. Peter, Minnesota. Dorothy, a life-long resident of Oklahoma, was born to Edward William and Lillie Mae Todd in El Reno, Oklahoma on August 13, 1923. She graduated from El Reno High School in 1941 and then attended Saint Anthony's School of Nursing in Oklahoma City. She received her certificate to practice nursing on October 7, 1944.

Dorothy married Harold Henry Salyer on August 14, 1945, and together raised their family in the Capitol Hill area of Oklahoma City. In 1985, they moved to Grove, Oklahoma where they spent their retirement years on Grand Lake. In 2009, she moved back to Oklahoma City and resided in Baptist Village until health issues necessitated a move to Minnesota where family was able to care for her the last two years of her life.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Harold Salyer; son, Harold Edward Salyer; daughter, Mary Marlaine Gregorio; and brother, Kenneth Todd. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Susan and Mark Akland of St. Peter, Minnesota; son and daughter-in law, Robert Mitchell and LaDonna Salyer of Enosburg Falls, Vermont; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Opal and Fred Smith of Oklahoma City; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dorothy had a long and fulfilling career in nursing at various positions and locations. She retired after 40 years of nursing, but continued to serve the community as a hospital volunteer. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking and gardening. Most of all, she loved her family, friends, and church. To the end, she recalled her vivid experience, when at age 12 in a small country church west of El Reno, Jesus came into her heart and she gave her life to Christ. Her faith in Christ was her strength and guide for life.

Services to celebrate her life will be 10:00A.M. Saturday, December 23, 2017 in The Chapel at Resthaven. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy's request was that any memorial be given to Mayo Clinic HOSPICE, Mankato, Minnesota.
