Melvin Truman Matthews, 97, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away on January 1, 2020.
Melvin was born in Hammond, Oklahoma, on May 16, 1922. He graduated from Butler High School. Shortly after graduating, he entered the Navy where he spent four years in World War II on the USS Whiteside. Melvin’s three brothers, Kenneth, Raymond, and Gerald, serviced in WWII as well.
At age 39, Melvin married Henrietta Witcher on June 30, 1961. They were married almost 52 years when Henrietta passed on June 24, 2013.
Melvin was self-employed for most of his life. His company, Matthews Materials, was his life-long commitment that he loved doing. Along with his work, Melvin loved horses. He spent most weekends showing and training horses for various types of shows and events. In 1976, Melvin’s pride and joy, “You Win Again”, was named World Champion by the American Quarter Horse Association. Later in life, when Melvin had retired, he enjoyed fixing things and doing small projects in his shop. Melvin was also a member of First Baptist Church in Moore, Oklahoma.
Melvin is survived by son, Todd Matthews; brother, Gerald Matthews; grandchildren, Shane Matthews, Tyler Matthews, Alyssa Matthews, Jordyn Matthews, and McKenzie Matthews, along with many nieces and nephews.
Melvin is preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta Witcher Matthews; sons, Melvin Bryce Matthews and Randall Wade Matthews; brothers, Kenneth Matthews, Raymond Matthews; sisters, Frances Agan and Beulah Black.
