On Sunday, December 6, 2020, Joan Calhoun, loving wife, grandmother, and mother of four children, passed away at the age of 59. Joan was born on April 25, 1961 in Sioux City, Iowa to Harold and Ruth Boden. On August 6, 1982, she married Jim Calhoun. Together, during nearly 39 years of marriage, they raised a daughter, Shawnna, and two sons, Andrew and Levi. Joan had a deep passion for helping and caring for people. She worked in Moore Public Schools for over 25 years, with the majority of that time spent at Westmoore High School in special education and was heavily involved in Special Olympics. During that time, she impacted many lives and volunteered countless hours in service to others. Joan always looked forward to her yearly shopping trip and to spend great quality time with her daughter, twin sister Judy and niece Amie. Alongside husband Jim, her children, and friends, she enjoyed spending time at her “happy place” on Lake Carl Blackwell. Joan also had a strong love for her dogs who went with her almost everywhere she went. She was elated to become a Grandmother, and showered granddaughter Mackenzie with love every chance she got. Joan was preceded in death by her son, Joseph. She is survived by her husband, Jim, her children, Shawnna (Robert), Andrew (Tessa), and Levi (Hollie), granddaughter Mackenzie, parents Harold and Ruth, siblings Judy, Jayne, Jenny, and Jeff, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 10:00am at Resthaven in Oklahoma City. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather outside in the backyard of Andrew Calhoun’s home for food and fellowship. In lieu of flowers or monetary gifts, the family asks that you send a donation to Special Olympics Oklahoma in her honor at www.sook.org/support/donate/.
