May 12, 1941 ~ November 22, 2021 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Tribute

Gerald Robert Melton, age 80, was born in Pumpkintown, SC on May 12, 1941, the son of Catherine (Crumpton) and Joseph Robert Melton. He passed away in Oklahoma City, OK on November 22, 2021.

Gerald attended John de la Howe School, and graduated from McCormick High School. He graduated from Clemson University in December 1966, and became a Federal employee with the US Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service in Columbia, SC. In 1974, Gerald joined the US Army Corps of Engineers in Charleston, SC. In 1985, he became Chief of the Charleston District Economics Branch. In 1991, his expertise was again recognized and he was selected to be the Chief of the South Atlantic Division (SAD) Economic and Social Analysis Division, based in Atlanta, GA. After more than 42 years of distinguished Federal service, Gerald retired in 2009. In 2014, Gerald was inducted into the SAD Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees.

Upon retirement, Gerald and Flossy returned to South Carolina, living on Lake Hartwell and later in Greenville, SC. His ways were quiet - but his love language of handmade gifts was strong. It was not unusual for a tree in his backyard to become a spinning top toy, a baseball bat, a rolling pin, or a bowl. Gerald never met a home repair he could not fix. And he always tended a robust garden. Gerald was also a Believer, attending Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston, SC, Hebron Church in Dacula, GA, and Bethel Baptist Church in Westminster, SC.

Gerald was married to Florine Rhodes Melton (Flossy) for 55 years. Together, they have three children: Shannon Melton Barghols (Brad) of Edmond, OK, Joseph Wallace Melton (Beth Ann Oliver) of Okatie, SC, and James Ronald Melton of Edmond, OK. They also have four grandchildren: Ashley Melton, Grayson Barghols, Cooper Barghols, and Delaney Barghols.

The family will hold private services at a later date. Donations may be made in Gerald’s name to the Youth Ministry at Bethel Baptist Church (160 Bethel Church Rd, Westminster, SC 29693). Condolences may be sent to the same address, attention Florine Melton.
