Tribute

Gary William Schmidt passed from this life, taking the hand of Jesus, March 24, 2021. He was born July 29, 1948 in Oklahoma City. Gary grew up in the Oklahoma City area and attended U. S. Grant High School, Class of 1966. He worked as a mechanic in the family business, Jim and Jerry’s Garage for many years. In addition, he served in the Oklahoma Air National Guard for more than 20 years prior to retirement. Gary was also a reserve deputy for the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s office for a number of years.
Gary’s hobbies included golfing, bowling, softball, camping, and anything related to old cars, boats, and motorcycles. He especially loved spending time with his family at the lake. He always looked forward to Thursday morning breakfast with Tom Parsons, Tom Venable, brother Mike, and others.
He was always known to be able to provide a story or experience to any conversation. It gave him the ability to instantly make friends with anyone he met.
He was preceded in passing by his parents, Jerry and LaVon Schmidt; and wife, Debbie Schmidt.
Those left to continue his legacy include his wife, Carolyn Schmidt, his high school sweetheart; children, Gary Don Schmidt and Tammy; Chris Reeves and Tabatha; Summer Cope and Brent; and David Reeves and Taylor; grandchildren, Garrett Schmidt, Landon Schmidt, Maci Schmidt, Caitlen Reeves, Austin Reeves, Dakota Cope, Aspen Cope, Talon Cope, Brekyn Cope, and Ethan Floyd; brother, Mike Schmidt and Janelle; sisters, Sherri Gleaves and Gary, and Denise Schmidt; and life-long friends of many years, John Nelson and Becky, Lori Meek, and Pete Bussum along with countless other friends and family.
A Celebration of Life Service and a display of old cars honoring Gary will take place at 11:00 am, Monday, March 29, 2021 at Emmaus Baptist Church, 16001 S. Western Ave. Oklahoma City, OK 73170.
