Ernalea Darlene Griffin, a special education teacher for over 30 years, was a wife of 40 years, a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother as well as a mother figure to so many students she came into contact with. Darlene passed away peacefully the evening of July 23th, having lived a full life. Darlene was born on June 18th, 1946. Darlene and her Husband, Daniel Griffin, had 5 children between them. Darlene or known to most as Dee, met Dan at a Children’s Canoe camp while floating the Illinois River. She led a fascinating life and could always be found making someone’s day. Her pursuit of a career in education was fueled by a passion to make a difference in young people’s lives. She ultimately chose she could make the most difference in the field of special education. She never backed down from a challenge and certainly rose to the occasion in so many aspects of her life. She leaves behind a family who loves and misses her, as well as a community of colleagues, former students and now grown children whose lives she positively impacted. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Earnest Connelly and Betty Hutton, her sister Judy, her brother Larry and her daughter Darla Ferguson. She leaves behind her husband Daniel Griffin, her sons James Ferguson, Pete Griffin, and Michael McClain, and her daughter Margaret Sorensen. She also leaves behind 16 grandchildren; Natasha and Danny Pryor, Jasmine and Corbyn Ferguson, Alexis and Michael Womack, Avrey and Abram Ferguson, Hannah Durham, Madeline and Warren Sorensen, Lorena and Sean McDow, Michael and Catrina McClain, and Michael Pelayo. Her 17 great grandchildren included Mireya, Oliva, Maddison, Aaliyah, Jaylin, Holden, Zavier, Noah, Kinley, Ryan, Gabriela, Gracie, Aiden, Lainey, Lennon and twins Hayley and Amry. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Her service will be graveside at Resthaven on Thursday, July 30th at 10:00am in the Garden if Hope.
