Dr. Loyd V. Allen, Jr., Ph.D., RPh., a distinguished figure in the field of pharmacy, passed away Tuesday, April 23. His legacy as a trailblazer, educator, and mentor will forever make an impact on pharmaceutical compounding and academia. Born on September 12, 1943, in Pryor, Oklahoma, Dr. Allen was the firstborn son of Loyd and Verna Allen. In 1981, he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, a transformation that profoundly shaped his life’s trajectory. Dr. Allen’s professional journey was marked by unparalleled achievements and unwavering dedication. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy before completing his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics at the University of Texas at Austin. Throughout his outstanding career, Dr. Allen held various prestigious positions, including Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma HSC College of Pharmacy, Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, and CEO of the Midwest Institute of Research and Technology. A visionary leader, Dr. Loyd Allen revolutionized the field of pharmaceutical compounding, spearheading groundbreaking research and innovation. His contributions extended far beyond the classroom, as he served as a consultant to compounding pharmacists and the pharmaceutical industry. His scholarly output included 30 books, chapters, and monographs, and the award-winning Editor-in Chief of the 22nd edition of Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy. Dr. Loyd Allen’s impact transcended borders, with his textbooks translated into multiple languages, reflecting his global influence. He was a Fellow of esteemed organizations such as AFPE, ACA, APhA-APRS and IACP, earning accolades such as the J. Leon Lascoff Memorial Award and the Stimulation of Research Award for his outstanding service of the profession of pharmacy. Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Allen was a devoted family man, finding profound joy in his role as a husband, father, grandfather, and a great-grandfather. Dr. Allen found fulfillment in serving Jesus through his local church and sharing with others how to come to faith in Jesus Christ. His legacy of love, faith, and compassion will endure through the generations he leaves behind. Dr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Verna Allen; son-in-law, Forrest Pollock; grandson, Preston Pollock; and great-granddaughter, Eliana Gifford. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Allen of 59 years; daughter, Dawn Cross and husband John; daughter, Tammy Ware and husband Tim; daughter Natalie Butcher and husband Damon. Dr. Allen is also survived by his brother, Bob Allen and wife Nancy. He loved being “Papa” to his 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
