Doug was the person who taught me everything I know...about so many things, in addition to Veteran's Eligibility. He was a great teacher, one of the best supervisors, and an even greater friend. He never failed to make me laugh, think outside the box, and remember why we come to work everyday. We will all be lost without his knowledge, humor, and friendship. I will do my best to make you proud of me Douglas, cause I know you'll be watching.

Doug was someone we could count on in Chaplain Service when we were trying to help a veteran who had a difficult administrative issue. I always appreciated his willingness to take the time to try to untangle difficult situations. His very untimely death is a loss to his family and to all the VA family. Chaplain Service is holding all in prayer.

My colleague and friend, for the 20 years of service together you were always helpful and willing to be of service. A gentle giant, with a presence that was as warm and welcoming as you were knowledgeable and efficient. You made serving and caring for America's Heroes doable with your attitude of service first and kindness in delivery of that service. I will miss your gentle teasing to "get back to work doc" or you greetings in passing. Prayers of comfort to your family. You will be greatly missed. Honored to have worked with you and to call you a friend. KP

As you know, you were an inspiration to us all in Team Greatness!!! No matter how long I will be here, you would have forgotten more than I will ever know.
I will miss you dearly, May God continue to give your family and friends the support they need. I will CELEBRATE knowing you as my friend, co-worker and boss.

Doug was a great man to work with. He had a great attitude. He was like a big kind bear that helped everyone he could. Although are interactions were limited to the work environment I considered him a friend. In this time it is my hope the family knows that Doug was appreciated and he will be missed. My heart goes out to you along with my prayers.

Doug,
when I think of the VA I think of you. Your jovial laugh, your sweet sternness, your matter-of-fact way of handling everything that no one else is willing to deal with. You singlehandedly made sure Stand Down Registration happened without a hitch and only asked for a comfortable chair and popcorn. This year your chair and popcorn will be there, and you will be missed. I could not have done my job this long without you and you are definitely irreplaceable. Thank you for giving yourself 100% to the VA, to your friends, your family, and your country. Love you bud!
Christine

Doug
I can't believe I even have to write something like this. I can't believe you passed away before you got to live your life fully. There's so much you didn't get to do and so much you didn't get to experience. It's not fair, I have to write this letter. That's not how it's supposed to be. Losing someone I admire and looked up is so devastating. Losing someone, that pushed beyond my limits held me accountable for everything I did, made me a better person. I wish you how big of an impact on my life. Hell, when my boys were born I did shed one tear, but when I got the call that night I shed so many tears. Losing you made the world come to a halt. It shows you how fragile life is and how quickly it can be taken away.
There are so many things I wish I could ask you so many things I wanted to learn to help veterans. I wonder if you actually look down see how much I miss you. I
God, I will miss you each and every day. Who would've thought I'd be so young and already worrying about going to a friend's memorial? We had so many plans of fixing the VA system, helping veterans and making a difference. Why did you have to go so early? I'm not too sure which hurts most when we butt me heads, you making fun of the army, or the anniversary of your passing. Either way, it's just another day in my calendar that revolves solely around you. There's not enough space in the world to write about the impact you had on my life. I never told how much you I wanted to be like, be so knowledge help veterans, make a difference, make veterans be proud of the VA system. Even a couple hundred words will not do you justice in the slightest. I still have yet to process through my mind. Why did you have to leave so soon? It's not fair! Honestly, I have some anger built up you leaving.
I like to think about all the things you would be proud of me what we did and we accomplished (Jami, Traci, Will, Jarien, and I). I wish I had the chance to tell you how much I am going to miss you. I miss you more than anyone would ever believe. And as I sit here writing this, I don't think the pain of missing you will ever go away. People say time heals pain. I know tears will never bring you back, so I try my best to keep my head up and focus on positive. I pray every day that I am making you proud.
I did not only lose a boss, but my friend, a my mentor, my hero, my role model, you always had my back. Especially my time during my son's epilepsy episodes.
Gone but not forgotten, may possibly be the truest, most relevant statement I have ever heard. Maybe one day we will meet again, but until then, Rest In Peace. I love you and I will miss you so much.
If I just has 5 more seconds of your time I will tell you "Thank you for everything"
P.S. We both like to dive, funny how we had a lot of things in common.

His love and compassion for his fellow veterans goes unprecedented. For all that he imparted, shared and did .. he will be truly missed.
