Obituary Donald L. Pennington August 14, 1944 – May 28, 2023
Don passed away on May 28, 2023, in Oklahoma City under the exceptional care of Integris Hospice House.
Don was born on August 14, 1944, in Mackay, Queensland, Australia, to Leland Pennington, a soldier with the US Army, and Dorothy Brown Pennington of Mackay. His family moved to Oklahoma City when he was very young. He graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1963, then Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor of Science in 1973. After serving honorably in the Oklahoma Army National Guard, he joined the Oklahoma City Police Department on October 16, 1969, as a member of Police Academy Class 57. He served 27 years with OCPD in many positions in multiple divisions before retiring as a Major on December 27, 1996. After retirement, he spent many years as part of the FEMA Security Cadre. He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling “out west” as much as he could.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Harvena “Deana” Shockley Pennington. He is survived by his partner in crime, Marilyn Pennington; son Michael Pennington and husband Richard Ornberg of Dallas, TX; son Steven Pennington of Moore, OK; daughter Cynthia Infante of Frisco, TX; stepson Max Watson and wife Karin; and grandchildren Christopher, Hope, Kimberley, Alexandria, Alyssa, and Sean.
Those are the facts. But he was so much more than just the facts. He was a loving husband, partner, father, and grandfather. He was someone you could always count on, no matter how long it had been since you last spoke. He was a lover of history (especially the Old West), and an avid storyteller. He was loving, witty, gruff, charming, sarcastic, funny, accomplished, trusted, capable, brilliant, generous, and so much more. There is no way to capture the incredible person and amazing life of this great man in a simple statement. His loss will be felt by many. We will miss him and his “Big Smile” dearly.
Services will be held at 2:00pm on June 3, 2023, at St. Andrew’s Community Church, 2727 SW 119thStreet, Oklahoma City, OK 73170. The family will receive friends and guests at Kenneth G. White Family Center at Resthaven Funeral Home on June 3, 2023, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
