In Loving Memory Alice Louise (Baker) Southern
October 29, 1931 – June 16, 2022

Alice Southern, 90, of Las Animas, Colorado went to be with the Lord on June 16, 2022, in Arvada, Colorado. She left this world peaceful & humble with her family at her side, which is exactly the way she lived her life. She was born on October 29,1931 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Leland Ray and Florence Edith Heckert. Her story is one of Love, Hardship, Creativity and Kindness. She will forever be remembered for the way she loved with all her heart, for her skills as a seamstress, her love of Jesus Christ & the wonderfully delicious pies she baked. While working at her Grand Mother’s restaurant in Oklahoma City, she met the love of her life Floyd Joe Southern and married him soon after on July 21,1947. The couple enjoyed working together in the orchards picking cherries and traveling from state to state following the harvest. After eight years they settled in Oklahoma City and started their family, they had three children, Edith Marie, Betty Jo and Floyd Joe Jr. (Little Joe). After a tragic accident took the life of their son the couple moved to Las Animas, CO., with their two daughters in 1967. She started working as a seamstress with her mother when she was a young teenager in Dallas Texas and continued to work in sewing factories as a seamstress in Oklahoma and Colorado until 1975 when she became the supervisor for Pryor Sewing Factory in La Junta which eventually moved to Rocky Ford which she retired from in 1997. After retiring from the sewing factory, she went to work for the Bent County Nursing Home in Las Animas as a cook’s helper. She enjoyed working and finally retired in 2005. Her sewing skills did not stop there, she made all the clothing for her family as the girls were growing up, she sewed for everyone in town, rather it was Barbie doll clothes or a formal gown she was the best, you couldn’t purchase clothing that was made as well or as pretty. She was spectacular. She was a devout Christian and a member of The First Baptist Church of Las Animas, and she loved her church family as if they were her own. She is preceded in death by her closest lifelong friend that she grew to know threw church, Ruth Rasmussen. She is survived by , her sister Olive Shaw 94 of Post TX., her daughters Edith Southern of Arvada, CO., Betty Jo Southern & husband Larry Nichols of Dunnellon, FL., her grandchildren Angel Lucero, of Arvada, CO., Vanessa Huhn & husband Joe of Maumee, OH., Jamie Muniz of Lee High Acres, FL., William Muniz of Las Animas, CO., Jolene Basterrechea & husband Gus of Monte Vista, CO., and Daniel Hollis of Bath, SD., her great grandchildren Lexi & Noah Chavez, Solana Torrez , Sophia, Emma & Luke Huhn, Alyse Basterrechea, Mayli, Jillian and Zachary Martin, Laci & Brielle Muniz, Nevaeh, Silas & Oliver Hollis.
